Day 7 early start to Rome.
Because I am writing this some days later, I don't remember much about the trip to Rome, except that Julie was as sick as a dog, and C our tour leader recommended keeping up,the schnapps, and keeping it in the mouth for as long as possible to kill the germs!
Anyway we got to Roma in the afternoon so we had a bit of time to look around by ourselves. Some of the group had gone off on an optional trip but we chose to go exploring and just follow our nose, with a couple of clues from the map. After a while we seemed to end up in the Government Departments and Embassy side of town, where there were lots of impressive buildings, some with names I could translate, most of them guarded by police, people in assorted uniforms, and just about all of them with guns.
After a whole we stumbled upon the Roman equivalent of the ANZC Memorial in Melbourne, but much more impressive.
We made our way to the famous Trevi fountain, and throw a coin into it, to get a wish granted.
This was not as easy as it sounds, because even though you have to use your right hand to throw it over your left shoulder (so far so good) you have to close your eyes while you do it. It is at this moment while you are trying to get all this co-ordinated, that the pickpockets strike! However we were not targeted, so hopefully J and I's wishes will come true.
After so much walking, it was time for something to eat, and a rather nice restaurant turned up on the route of our walk.
By now it was getting late, so instead of the metro, we took a taxi home, which was cheaper than one in Melbourne. Then straight to bed ready for an early start the next day.
Trivia Fact. Our guide told us the following day that Rome does not have an elaborate Metro system, because they do not want to disturb the ruins that they know lie beneath the city.
Julie has covered most of what we did in Rome in her posting and so I'll just add a few more photos:
