2 Oct Wed - leave Salzburg ( Austria) for Venice for 2 nights

This would have to be one of the most amazing days because of the stark contrasts we experienced in three different countries in less than 24 hours.

1 Salzburg,( Austria) is also known as the place where the Sound of Music was made and we visited various film locations as detailed in J's post.

2 Germany, Eagle's Nest.  The Bavarian place that took about two years to build for Hilter to commenerate his birthday. It's 1,834 metres above sea level and was referred to by the Allies as "Eagle's Nest" as it was built high up and away from others.  The road upto it is difficult and the structure is extravagant - particularly the 40 person lift, the incredible long tunnel to get there and the building itself with the use of marble exstensively. I found it difficult to separate the place from Hitler and his regime - even though it was a long time ago now.  Let alone the people who died from fighting in the war, I wondered how many people would have lost their lives building this access and building;and

3 Venice, Italy. Where we arrived and transferred to boats to get to our Hotel and then boat ride to our  dinner, canal cruise by night and then music and drinks in St Mark's square.

How incredible!

On to Germany and Hitler's Eagle's nest.  Link to site for Eagle's Nest

A glimpse of the inside of ornate lift in the background.

A view of the Eagle's nest building to the right.  Fog had moved in and you can just make out some people walking up the track with Eagle's nest just visible.

My climb to the 'hill' from Eagle's nest.

After this it was on to magical Venice which I will cover in the next post.  We had two nights there and I loved every second!
